An Introduction to Intonation – Functions and Models
نویسندگان
چکیده
This chapter provides an introduction to intonation in general, and is loosely based on an oral presentation given in the workshop “Non-native prosody: phonetic description and teaching practice” in Saarbrücken. Although intonation is particularly difficult for learners of a second language to master, it is seldom taught systematically. Although much of the early work on intonation was didactic in nature, recent studies have tended to be more experimental and/or theretically rigourous. This has created a gap between intonation as it is used in teaching and intonation research, making it difficult for the results of such research to be of use to teachers of a second language. It is our aim to bridge this gap. We provide an overview of the main issues dealt with in current theoretical research, discussing the different forms intonation can take and the functions it can fulfill, the one of course dependent on the other. Reflecting the context of the workshop, examples are predominantly in German with English translations, accompanied where relevant by Italian equivalents. We then present the two currently most widespread models of intonation, which will hopefully be useful for second language teachers and textbook writers for their own research and for preparation of course material. We also aim to facilitate reading of current primary literature on aspects of intonation, in particular on languages not dealt with here. With this, we hope that results from theoretical research will find their way into the classroom.

The Role of Noticing in L2 Learners’ Production of Intonation Patterns
This study was an attempt to explore the role that the increased perceptual saliency of L2 input features or output flaws and hereby promoting L2 learners’ noticing (through planned instructional activities) can play in the learners’ use of correct English intonation patterns. The participants were 80 Iranian EFL students attending four intact classes, two low-intermediate and two upper-interme...
متن کاملThe Penta Model of Speech Melody: Transmitting Multiple Communicative Functions in Parallel
Existing models of intonation typically define intonational components primarily in form and only secondarily in function. They also typically try to link observed F0 contours directly to intonational meanings. The PENTA model of speech melody presented in this paper deviates from this tradition. First, it makes a clear separation between the meaning-bearing components of intonation, which are ...
متن کاملWeighted correlation based atom decomposition intonation modelling
Intonation modelling is an integral part of text-to-speech systems from their very beginnings. This has led to the proliferation of various intonation models, each with its own relative strengths and weaknesses. Only a few of these intonation models are based on physiology, despite the advantage that such models are language independent. We propose a new intonation model inspired by the physiol...
متن کاملOligopoly with Capacity Constraints and Thresholds
Abstract Extended Oligopoly models will be introduced and examined in which the firms might face capacity limits, thresholds for minimal and maximal moves, and antitrust thresholds in the case of partial cooperation. Similar situation occurs when there is an additional cost of output adjustment, which is discontinuous at zero due to set-up costs. In these cases the payoff functions of the...
متن کاملSentence-final Particles and Intonation: Two Forms of the Same Thing
This paper argues that the linguistic forms of intonation that have scope over the whole sentence are morphemic, and should therefore be classified as suprasegmental sentence particles. In defense of this hypothesis, a range of studies are reviewed which argue that intonation expresses discourse meanings (or has grammatical functions), and that these meanings (or functions) are comparable to th...
